Chapter 5.4

Attention, Speed and Right of Way

Unusual Dimensions of an Airplane

In everyday life, we have no experience with vehicles measuring 10m x 10m, which is why taxiing requires special caution. During the entire taxiing operation, i.e. from the moment when the parking brake is released until it is set again, the space near the aircraft - front, side and rear - must be constantly checked.

Attention, Speed and Right of Way

TAXI SPEED

The factors that influence the speed of rolling are:

  • the inclination of the ground
  • the type of surface
  • the direction and strength of the wind
  • the power setting

Taxiing safely requires a certain amount of restraint. In parking areas, near other aircraft and around corners, it is necessary to drive not faster than walking pace.

After the brakes have been released, the brakes must be released with a small increase in power, and as soon as the appropriate speed has been reached, the power must be reduced so as to obtain a speed which is adapted to the situation. And the power of the engine must be maintained constantly.

Taxiing on surfaces with high resistance (such as grass or sand) requires a steady increase in engine power to maintain a taxi speed.

Attention, Speed and Right of Way

Simultaneous engine power and braking

During taxiing, it is illogical to brake while increasing engine power. This combination should be avoided in order not to increase brake overheating and wear and to reduce unnecessary noise.

The taxiing speed will not be stabilized with the brakes but with the engine speed.

A violent brake causes a nose-down movement / NOSE DOWN.

Attention, Speed and Right of Way

RIGHT OF WAY, CLEARANCE

The same rules of RIGHT OF WAY on the ground and in the air prevail in air traffic and are laid down in ICAO standards and in national standards.

Attention, Speed and Right of Way

RIGHT OF WAY, CLEARANCE

In the absence of instructions, the pilots involved in the traffic must take the appropriate initiatives to ensure the safe running of the ground maneuvers. The intentions are declared over the AFIS frequency.

Attention, Speed and Right of Way

RIGHT OF WAY, CLEARANCE

If the maneuvering area is controlled by an air traffic control unit, you will be authorized to taxi by the air traffic controller, so that the controller organizes the traffic of the aircraft announced on the maneuvering area. Up to a specified limit, the CLEARANCE LIMIT.
