Scanning
Chapter 19.4
Monitoring Instruments
The number of instruments required for flight and engine monitoring requires a systematic reading of the displays. A random and unorganized reading would make it difficult to get an idea of the aircraft’s orientation and power required and available.
SELECTIVE RADIAL SCAN
The systematic reading technique is SCANNING. «To scan» means «to let the eye browse» or «sweep».
The SELECTIVE RADIAL SCAN principle is easly explained by the image of the spoked wheel. The ATTITUDE INDICATOR, as the main instrument, is located at the hub. The scanning is done in the direction of the spokes, always starting from the horizon towardsthe various instruments.
In the SELECTIVE RADIAL SCAN technique, the Al is the main instrument. After consulting an instrument, the glance always returns to the Al before consulting another instrument.
Extended Field of Vision
Through extensive training the field of vision can be widened, allowing simultaneous reading and interpretation of several instruments.
