Chapter 11.5

The Importance of Regular Training

Regular practice of abnormal situation and emergency procedures is part of your training during and after formation. You need to practice abnormal and emergency procedures at regular intervals. Take out the AFM at regular intervals and look at the EMERGENCY CHECKLIST. During a flight with a flight instructor, it is worth taking the opportunity to run through scenarios given by the instructor and practise the basic procedure (F-N-C-E-E-D). Even if there is no flight instructor on board, it is possible to practise certain scenarios within the scope of possibilities.

The Importance of Mental Training

You can't practise all scenarios on the aircraft. This is where mental training comes into play. Imagine a very specific situation:

  • What technical or medical problem occurs?
  • Where are you located?
  • How high are you flying?
  • What phase of flight are you in?
  • What airspace are you in?
  • What is the weather like?
  • How many passengers are you carrying?
  • Are you in contact with ATC?

Now mentally go through the scenario using the basic procedure (F-N-C-E-E-D). If you have a picture of the cockpit in front of you or you have a procedure trainer / MOCK UP available, then the mental training will be even more effective. Repeat this mental training at regular intervals. By doing so, you will find that you internalise the F-N-C-E-E-D and can recall and apply it in an emergency.
