Taxi Procedures

Chapter 5.3

Objectives

To know the checks and procedures for taxiing

Before Taxi

Before you start taxiing to leave the parking area, the «CHECK AFTER ENGINE START» must be completed. The systems to be checked depend on the airplane equipment.

Methodical Hint:

Start taxi, brake check and stopping are standard procedures. Thus these manipulations become a reflex during the flight instruction. Automatised procedures, executed at the right place and the right moment, reduce the work load.

Start Taxi

Before every START TAXI, check and call out:

Brake Check

Before every START TAXI, check and call out:

Before the brakes are checked, you must taxi slowly. This allows you to stop immediatelly in case of brake failure.

Checks during Taxi

While taxiing you check the brakes, the steering and the gyroscopic flight instruments for proper function. The functional testing of flight instruments, which are driven by gyros or other stabilisation systems, is carried out during changes in direction. Start with this check only when you have left the parking area.

The Taxi Check

With the TAXI CHECK you confirm that the nosewheel steering, the brakes and the stabilized flight instruments have been checked during taxi.

Surveillance of Flight Instruments by means of SCANNING

Stop Taxi

After every stop you check and call out:

Checks and Procedures after Landing

After vacating the runway and crossing the stop bar, which separates the runway from the taxi area, the airplane is usually stopped on a straight part of the taxiway and the AFTER LANDING CHECK is done.

Questions

Immediately after you start taxi you check ...

the brakes for proper functioning and symmetry.

Why don't you check the gyroscopic flight instruments when taxiing straight ahead?

A malfunction may not be detected because the stabilising effect of a gyroscope is only visible during changes in direction.
