Engine Power
Chapter 4.6
Objectives
To know the function of the THROTTLE
To know the correct use of the THROTTLE
The Throttle
On piston engines, the throttle lever acts on the throttle of the carburettor, which is why it is called a THROTTLE.
Shape and function of the THROTTLE
Mounted on the center console or ...
…mounted on the dashboard
Position of the Power Lever
The power setting is determined according to the AFM. It is achieved by setting the THROTTLE to an appropriate position and read off the RPM indicator .
The power lever can be fixed in each desired position by a friction lock.
Position of the Power Lever
The power is determined according to the AFM and fixed by means of the tachometer which requires intermediate positions of the THROTTLE.
The power lever can be fixed in each desired position by a locking mechanism.
Technique for Increasing and Decreasing Engine Power
Changes must be made taking into account the behavior of the engine during acceleration.
The movement from idle to full power requires at least 2 to 3 seconds. At the beginning of the acceleration, the movement must be slow.
When reducing power, the throttle should be handled fluently but not abruptly.
Questions
On take-off, how is the engine power increased?
The throttle is moved firmly but gently towards full power, thus from IDLE to FULL POWER it takes about 3 seconds.
In Cruise Flight, how do you set the corresponding power (CRUISE POWER)?
The power is determined according to the AFM and fixed by means of the tachometer which requires intermediate positions of the THROTTLE.
