Change of Controls

Chapter 3.5

Objective

To know how to transfer the commands 'Pilot Flying' / 'Pilot Not Flying'

Command relationships on board an airplane

When two pilots share the flying of an airplane, the following must be known at all times and without any doubts:

  • the most experienced pilot is usually the PILOT IN COMMAND

  • the pilot who manipulates the flight controls is the PILOT FLYING

PILOT IN COMMAND

He is the final authority, the PILOT IN COMMAND, the PIC

  • The PIC performs or ultimately confirms all decisions taken during the progress of the flight.

The pilot at the commands

.

  • The pilot who holds the flight controls is the Pilot Flying / PF

  • The pilot who is not piloting (but assisting) is the Pilot Not Flying / PNF

The tranfer of controls is not a transfer of command (PIC). The two duties should not be confused!

PROCEDURE: Transfer of Flight Controls

The pilot in command transfers the flight controls to the other pilot or student pilot at his / her discretion. The transfer must be carried out clearly and without confusion.

  • The PF holds the flight controls until the PNF has taken over and has confirmed the handover:

Procedure: Transfer of Flight Controls

If it becomes necessary, the PIC can take over the flight controls at any time:

  • PIC: "MY CONTROLS" or "I HAVE CONTROLS".

  • PF: "YOUR CONTROLS" or "YOU HAVE CONTROLS".
