Advanced Turning, Airmanship

Chapter 15.4

Loss of Control in a Steep Turn

If in a steep turn you begin to loose control of the attitude, disorientation, the appearance of strong accelerations, lowering of the nose of the airplane and increase of the airspeed may occur.

The first measure is to reduce the bank angle with the aileron control. In most cases it is reasonable to place the airplane in horizontal flight.

If the speed increases, the engine power must be reduced to achieve a normal flight attitude.

Recovery of Unusual Flight Attitudes

By performing special exercises, a manoeuvre may fail and the airplane eventually finds itself in an unusual attitude.

Straighten up the airplane in normal flight attitude by rotating around the longitudinal axis. This is the prefered solution before any other «recovery measures».
