Position of Conflicting Traffic, Avoidance

Chapter 3.6

Objective

To be able to announce correctly the position of an airplane you observe during flight

Determining its position

The principle:

Each aircraft observed is memorised and announced by the crew member who sees it first.

Method:

To indicate direction, we use a clock face. The height and direction of the other traffic is given relative to its own position in space. For example, one pilot announces:

  • "TRAFFIC, THREE O'CLOCK, HIGH".

The other pilot confirms the announcement saying:

  • "IN SIGHT".

Avoidance maneuvres

ALARM:

Observe and estimate quickly.
Prepare for the immediate start of an avoidance maneuver.
Determine a possible avoidance direction.

Avoidance maneuvres

WARNING:

Observe periodically.
Evaluate possible avoidance maneuvers.
ROCK WINGS

Avoidance maneuvres

IDENTIFY:

When the other traffic does not pose any danger, just state its presence for situation awareness matter.
