Variable Bank Angles in Turns

Chapter 15.3

Wind Effect Compensation

In order to perform a circle at a constant distance from a fixed geographical point, the bank must be varied at different segments of the circle, thus preventing the aircraft from being displaced by the wind.

The execution of steep turns over a fixed geographical point during strong winds requires a good constant coordination of all flight controls.

The Figure of 8

The Figure of 8 consists of two consecutive steep turns, one circle to the left, the other to the right. The starting point is a geographically defined position. Over this position the change of direction takes place.

During the change in direction, you have to pay attention to the great effect of the adverse yaw. It will be necessary to adequately use the rudders!

After the two circles, the plane must again be above the geographical point of departure, therefore the influence of the wind must be compensated by appropriate adaptations of the bank.

The position of the seats side by side must take into account the effect of the parallax.
