Approach and Landing
Chapter 17.3
Early Establishment of a Low Speed Flight Configuration
When approaching a terrain, if the cloud base is low or there are cloud patches, poor visibility and / or little space for the necessary flight maneuvers, it is advisable to put the aircraft in a reduced speed configuration (PRECAUTIONARY CONFIGURATION) as soon as possible, this airspeed is identical to the V INIT APP defined in chapter 13.
Early Establishment of a Low Speed Flight Configuration
By reducing the speed to V INIT APP and deploying the flaps to the first notch, we will have:
- reduced speed and thus a smaller turn radius
- a lower V STALL thanks to the extended flaps
- a better view of the ground from the cockpit, because the extended flaps lowers the nose of the airplane
Final / Flare / Touch down
Conduct the FINAL with engine power, put the airplane down with a low rate of descent, as with a SOFT FIELD LANDING. If the terrain is short, you will have to apply the procedure for SHORT FIELD LANDING according to the AFM.
Final / Flare / Touch down
If the first approach is not satisfactory, or if the flare becomes too long, you must immediately initiate a GO-AROUND procedure. This requires sufficient time, adequate weather and a sufficiently clear climbing segment and have sufficient obstacle clearance. You should never enter a layer of fog or clouds.
Final / Flare / Touch down
If there is a great danger of damaging the aircraft during the landing, you must, before the flare take safety measures for a forced landing:
- close the fuel supply
- IGNITION and MASTER SWITCH OFF
- ajar the doors
- remove your eye glasses
Procedure after the Precautionary Landing
The procedures to be applied after this landing are identical to those for a forced landing as described in Chapter 16.
